Project Title: Asserting Popular Access and Rights to Resources in Southwest Bangladesh (APAR)

Brief history of the Organization:
UTTARAN is a social development organization actively working in the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh since 1985. The organization has evolved by assisting the disadvantaged people in their struggle for existence against poverty, underdevelopment and injustices. UTTARAN provides direct support through its diversified programs and activities to capacitate the disadvantaged people in dealing with their social, environmental, health, education, economic and cultural predicaments. Presently, UTTARAN is actively working with partners in three strategic districts of the region namely Satkhira, Gopalganj and Khulna with 11 branches covering 30,000 direct beneficiaries (including partners’), of which 70% are women and 33% are religious-ethnic minorities including outcaste/ untouchables. The organization has 250 full time and 450 part time staff.
Project Objective:
- To establish access and rights of the landless and other resource poor people to the Khasland and other public resources - To improving upon the quality of their livelihoods - To adequately empower them both socially and politically - To enhance their capacity to effectively pressurize the key actors towards addressing the needs and rights of the poor people - To build capacity of the local government institution
Expected Outcome:
- 460 primary groups are claiming and realising their rights to Khas land and Khas water bodies. - A total of 3200 acres of Khas land with water bodies are recovered and distributed among 4000 landless families. - A total of 6000 organised group members are using their Khas land for cultivation. - Over 5000 organised group members are empowered both socially and politically. - A national level network and alliance on land rights is in place.
Project Goal: To reduce social, economical and political inequalities and injustices particularly landlessness, poverty and underdevelopment caused by denial of rights, inadequate access to public resources, bad governance and violence.
