| Brief history of the Organization: |
BDPC is a non-government organization, established in 1992. It is the only NGO in Bangladesh, which has pioneered in the role as a facilitator, providing guidance, advice, inputs and knowledge towards capacity development of actors and institutions engaged in disaster management, and risk reduction activities. BDPC is solely engaged in the whole gamut of disaster management programs e.g. research, study, publication, advocacy and lobbying, program appraisal, strategy formulation, training, media materials development, message dissemination, post-disaster response planning and intervention, monitoring, evaluation, etc. It has in-house capacity of professional expertise from different disciplines of disaster management including capacity building, gender awareness, advocacy and lobbying. |
| Project Objective: |
- Rehabilitation of income generating assets lost/damaged in disasters to ensure sustained livelihood of the marginalized low-income group.
- Demonstration of how the GoB’s Risk Reduction Fund can be successfully used for risk reduction and long-term poverty eradication initiatives of the poor and the disadvantaged low-income group.
- Reduction of Risk to natural disasters of the poor and the low-income groups by enhancing their capacity and reducing their vulnerabilities.
- Preparation and production of a handbook for replication of the project throughout the country. |
| Expected Outcome: |
1. Established institutions and governance process are activated for integration and mainstreaming of disaster risk reduction into relief and development programs.
2. Stakeholders motivated to provide support in achieving the project goal
3. Linkage established with the beneficiaries and related stakeholders
4. Targeted communities organized to facilitate and participate in project activities.
5. Targeted households enhanced to have sustainable means of livelihood and their level of income raised.
6. Their house structures strengthened and capacity for disaster preparedness enhanced, and hence risk to natural disaster reduced.
7. Targeted households are aware of their basic rights and build confidence to seek their right to justice from relevant sources in time of need.
8. Targeted households motivated to enroll their children in existing formal and non formal education
9. A handbook produced for replication of the project by the government and NGOs. |
| Project Goal: |
1. Good governance in the field of disaster management so that hundreds of crores of taka allocated by the government are spent for ensuing sustainable livelihood and reduction of disaster risk of the poor and low-income group people.
2. Alleviation of poverty by improving the income status of the poor and the disadvantaged low-income group who are vulnerable to natural disasters
3. Integration of risk management components into development planning for sustainable development of the targeted groups. |
| Major Activity: |
- Assessment of socio-economic status of the beneficiaries.
- Advocacy at policy level.
- Sensitization of Stakeholders at local level.
- Organizing the community by identifying the Change Agents (community facilitators) and forming Village Disaster Preparedness Committees.
- Development of communication and training materials.
- Capacity enhancement of the staff members, beneficiaries and stakeholders at local level (UzDMC, UDMC, PICs, CAs).
- Promoting Risk Reduction and Human Rights at Family and Community level.
- Follow-up on project activities by organizing coordination meeting with stakeholders and the beneficiaries to review project activities, identify problems and finding solutions.
- Facilitate MFDM investment for rehabilitation of the beneficiaries for disaster risk reduction
- Preparation of handbook for replication of the project initiatives throughout the country.
